Thailand star Chanathip “Messi J” Songkrasin admits he’d be happy to face South Korea in his side’s bid to reach the World Cup Finals – but wants to avoid regional giants Japan.

The draw for Asia third round qualifying takes place on Tuesday (April 12) in Malaysia with The War Elephants through for the first time since Englishman Peter Withe’s side made it there in 2002.

And while the little midfielder said Japan remain the strongest side in Asia, Chanathip would be confident against Australia, China, Qatar and Uzbekistan in a six-team group, claiming he would like to see Thailand pick up 12 points from the five games.

Both Japan and South Korea topped their respective groups with ease in the second round of qualifying, the latter winning a perfect eight from eight. Australia, Qatar and Uzbekistan were also group winners.

“I think Japan are a more difficult team than South Korea,” the 22-year-old told FourFourTwo Thailand. “Actually Korea are a very good team. They are very methodical in their play, but Japan have more variety and are technically superior.

“Of course, Korea are technically good too, but Japan are that bit better. If I had to choose the teams we meet in the group, I would go for China, Korea, Uzbekistan, Qatar and Australia.

“The toughest thing about facing Australia is their physical presence, especially in midfield. The UAE and Saudi Arabia I don’t want to meet. They are very good teams.

“I hope we can get at least 12 points in the group stage.”

Thailand topped their group in the second round of qualifying with 14 points from their six games, but will find the next round a much tougher proposition.

The third round will consist of two groups of six teams. The first two teams in each group go through to the 2018 World Cup Finals in Russia, with the two third-placed teams facing a play-off against each other, with the winner also progressing. The qualification games begin in September this year.
